YouTube Stitching Stars, Flicker Blocks, Slow Stitching from Canadian Needle Nana

It is happening, the lengthening of the days I mean. It is already noticeable but of course, we are still under banks of snow and will be for several more months. March can be our snowiest month here so I won't be seeing buttercups any time soon. But still, the tiny steady slivers of extra light each day add up.

And I finally managed a photo to show why this fellow is called an Eastern Cottontail. Isn't it cute! I called all rabbits "bunny rabbits" growing up. Did you?

Slow stitching- I should say really slow stitching has ...

Stitchy Gifts, Kits, Links, Quarter Dresdens from Canadian Needle Nana

I'm feeling a little drowsy this morning sitting here by the fire. I've just mopped the whole upstairs because we've had a lot of activity here. It's been a trying week because our furnace quit working and what a time to choose to do that during these very cold days in February. I'm thankful to have Brad who helped me with getting wood up from the back basement door for our fireplace...that is quite a trek. The little heaters we also used were okay but it was really nice to be able to keep ...

Wooden House Wintry Wanderings from Canadian Needle Nana

It seems to be all about the weather here in the winter months. Saturday, when I went out with the dogs, the temperature was this with a wind chill of -34C.

But the sun was shining and I could feel its warmth on my face. That was so nice while on the pond throwing the ball for the dogs. Then it warmed up and here in winter, that means the snow comes. We have a few more centimeters on the ground and it's still snowing. The school buses are not running this morning so another snow day for most ...

Snowy Blowy January Sewing Days from Canadian Needle Nana

Last Saturday night we had a small snowstorm that blanketed all the land including the icy paths. It was so pretty the next day in the woods. I am getting lots more enjoyment out of this winter maybe because of having Petey with us. He revels in the snow and the ball playing so much and also just romping all about on our walks. It is truly joyful to watch him. Here he is playing with his ball in the snow.

Our Ned on the other hand, moves as little as possible and is quite happy moseying along just smelling ...

Christmas Quilting, Baking and Colours from Canadian Needle Nana

I've made the list and in my case, I've had to check it not twice but three times. I've been wrapping and making note of what's for who, etc. I'm trying not to do what Mom always did and that was to find presents tucked away in a drawer somewhere the next July. Does that happen to you?

I worked really hard to get this Peppermint Trees quilt top to this stage with all the trees appliqued and outlined in blanket stitch. The trunks are not stitched down yet. I had to take it outside ...

Quilt Reveal: Scrappy Fish from High Road Quilter

Once upon a time, I came across a tutorial on how to make a quilt with collage pieces. It was a llama and I really enjoyed the process of making it.

I really enjoyed the process so I made more like it.

I didn't research whether the elephant came before or after the camel, but it is not really that important. I just wanted to show you the elephant too.

When I made the camel, instead of making a collage that was just the size of the camel, I got the bright idea that I could collage the whole ...

Free Patterns, Special Video, Appliqued House and Knitting Again from Canadian Needle Nana

I've been thinking about all the turkey dinners this week and put in an order to Farm Boy for our Christmas one. We've done this twice before and enjoyed it very much. Their turkeys are amazing and they even include dessert. Of course, I'll make a couple of our traditional side dishes too and a trifle.

I was switching out the mugs to start using the Christmas/winter ones and thought I'd show this one below again. I'd used Rifle Paper Co fabrics in the Christmas Present quilt I shared last post and here is ...

Free Patterns, Christmas /Winter Stitching, Orphan Blocks from Canadian Needle Nana

Below are a few early winter photos while the snow is a novelty. While walking the dogs, I'm finding the air so wonderful and bracing. But I am a little shocked with just how cold it is already in the season. It was minus 12 with strong wind gusts that took my breath away one day, but it's back to mild and kind of damp feeling today.

Here is my usual kitchen window photo; it was dark enough very early for the big garage light to stay on. That's another thing; here in the Northern Hemisphere we ...

All the Slow Stitching, Glue Basting?, Amish Hexagons, Can You See It? from Canadian Needle Nana

Walking the dogs just out the basement door and starting on the nearest trail, I spied something amongst the big old oak trees.  So here is another of my Can you see it? photos.

Maybe now?

What a beauty! I loved seeing this Barred Owl. I especially liked seeing how those feathers ring the neck and the tree trunks provided a natural frame.
I hear them hooting in the night so know they are near the house a lot. I took the dogs back to the house and returned to just watch it for awhile. I suspected it would be ...

Beauty Product, Embroidering Pumpkins, Amish Hexagons, Shows to Watch from Canadian Needle Nana

It's the flight of the geese season now, a natural cycle here in Canada. I've never been able to get a good photo of them with their marvelous vees marking the sky. But I am getting photos of the bright colours beginning to mark the landscape these days too. We both noticed it's getting darker earlier too or "closing in" as the old people called it.

I was dropping something off at Beth's yesterday and couldn't resist taking a photo of her pretty front veranda view.
I like how in these newer subdivions they don ...

Scrappy Pumpkins, Cross Stitching Crows, Homemade Bread Stuffing, Talking Temu from Canadian Needle Nana

This is the Smoke Tree in September. I like the mulberry and lavender colours the leaves have this time of year.
And of course, the wild New England Asters are also purples and so pretty.
Thank you for lamenting with me about the loss of our little pond. It is sad, especially for all the critters and birds that lived, drank and bathed there. And though its been raining off and on the last two days, most of September continued the rainless streak. We've had frost warnings and I covered my pots on the veranda twice now but didn ...

September Sewing, Sites To Visit, Tasty Stew Too from Canadian Needle Nana

From CoziNest Vintage Collective who enjoys whimsy as much as I do and Michele at 3P&N. I must admit I can't get my head around the fact that it is past the middle of September. The days are flying now and there doesn't seem to be enough time in the day to get all the things done that I want to.

This is the first rabbit I've seen in quite a while here and it is also the biggest.

This pretty flower below is a wild Allium, perhaps Wild Leek. If you can confirm, I'd ...

YouTube Videos, Hand Quilting, Feelings from Canadian Needle Nana

Richard Scarry books were a favourite of my children and then the grandsons. So many things on every page to point to and talk about. We had to make a rule with younger daughter, Beth, that she couldn't choose one of Richard's books for a night time read in bed book. She was the one so reluctant to give up on the day and she still makes the most of her busy days starting with a very early morning run.

We had geese flying overhead yesterday and turkeys trotting through though not in a cute little red car ...

Free Patterns, Autumn Cross Stitching, Starry Hexagons, YouTube Viewing from Canadian Needle Nana

It had been rainy but we seem to be back into a dry spell with no rain in the foreseeable future. Very cool overnights. Day times it's been changeable- I think that's the word to describe the weather- one minute dark and cloudy and the next a little sunshine. There have been two frost warnings so far with one night recording 0.6 C so the season is easing in. A pretty sign of such is the fall Aster like flowers are in bloom. What a pretty shade of lavender.

I've been busy inside stitching away giving ...

Basket Love Flimsie, Easy Table Topper, Photos, Clever Comments from Canadian Needle Nana

I'm just back from the library. For a small town library, it sure is busy there which I love to see. I passed by the Carp Custom Creamery Ice Cream shop and thought of LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color's question this week... did we grow up going to Dairy Queen? No I did not as they were not around in Newfoundland back then but I do have fond memories of summer visits with my Gander grandmother (the war widow) and going to the restaurant there. We always got banana splits as she was an ice cream lover ...

Free Patterns, YouTube Videos, Links, Stitching Too from Canadian Needle Nana

I did get outside for a little veranda stitching before the heat wave returned

and, on the front of the house, the Hydrangeas are definitely dominating the space just now.
The lawns are getting crispy and there was an announcement that the forests here in Ontario are under great stress. They've asked even hikers to stay out of them lest they start a fire. We are up to 19 days straight without any rain. Due to break with rain tomorrow.

Here is Petey getting his morning greeting and tickle from Tony.
Besides wonderful balancing Petey, I want to point ...

Can You See It?, Videos and Shows to Watch, Slow and Fast Stitching from Canadian Needle Nana

August has brought welcome cooler temperatures here this week to the Ottawa Valley, Canada. The season of growing things with all the greens and the buzzing things is at its height...this meadow below was literally abuzz, so much so I would not walk through it. In particular, there was a large fly there we used to call stouts as kids. Have no idea what exactly is a stout but we were afraid of them as they could bite.

Speaking of green, I saw this frog and was intrigued by his 2/3's brown and 1/3 green colouring ...

80 Quilt Blocks Later, Growing Fruit, Tackling Thistles from Canadian Needle Nana

It is not just the Goldfinches that tackle those spikey Bull Thistles. I've noticed two different kinds of butterflies giving them lots of attention too. Here is the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail in it's July brilliant yellow.

And an interesting brown with blue spots butterfly that took me some time to find a name for and am still unsure but think it is a Black Swallowtail.

These poor three plants are doing triple duty as they are loaded with bees too looking for nectar.

I got waylaid from chores this morning but for a great reason. The garden was ...

Two Stitchy Project Updates, Back to Basic Recipes, New Small Appliance from Canadian Needle Nana

Walking has been a challenge here lately because of the heat. I experienced something I've never felt before while down at the pond the other day. One of those breezes that wells from the ground came up and it blew hot air at my face. So hot! The poor dogs were panting so we three just hightailed it back to the house where I'm so thankful our AC is working again...only were able to use it once last summer. The thermometer told me it was 35C which I think is like 94 F or close- you have ...

Stitchy Wizardry, Blue Strings, Summer Desserts from Canadian Needle Nana

Well summer is upon us...it happens around this time every year :) no matter what the weather or temperatures. And what a marvel it all is. From the very early morning light to later sunsets, I am trying my best to take it all in and appreciate it. For it all moves by quickly...take the Phoebes with their nest on the sound box on the back of the house, for instance. The family...three little ones, are already raised and gone. They must have snuck out in the dead of night for me to have missed them the way ...
